What is Arcana Martial Arts?

Arcana Martial Arts Academy is one of very few schools recognized by the Thai Government for meeting the Standards Of Traditional Muay Thai in Canada.  Our BJJ belt ranking system and in house promotion is recognized by the IBJJF, the ruling body who oversees Brazilian Jiu Jitsu around the world.

We are a professional and family oriented martial arts school in Ottawa dedicated in providing the best instruction in Muay Thai Kick Boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With some of the most experienced instructors for a Ottawa martial arts school under one roof, Arcana Martial Arts Academy guarantees quality and excellence. Our aim is to provide everyone with the opportunity of a stress free, friendly atmosphere while challenging you both mentally and physically.

What to expect!

Arcana Martial Arts Academy is Ottawa’s most highly accredited Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kick Boxing academy. We have been home to multiple Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts including our head instructor Black Belt Damien Sabourin teaching a world class program in BJJ.

Purple belt Eric Girard, head instructor for the Beginner BJJ class, is both knowledgeable and patient taking students from zero BJJ experience to strong, confident individuals who have successfully competed in BJJ tournaments.

Liane Savoie is our most recent addition to Arcana’s team of instructors.  She has a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is one of the toughest girls you will ever meet.  She brings a ton of experience to Arcana and teaches an amazing class.

Kru Jamie Hahn has been training in Muay Thai for over 17 years in Ottawa back before Muay Thai became as popular as it is today.  He has competed in Muay Thai, MMA and grappling tournaments.  As owner of Arcana Martial Arts Academy, his goal is ensure that all the students at Arcana will receive quality instruction, in a clean and safe environment.

Poo Choi Kru Julio Escobar runs a very technical and high intensity Muay Thai kick boxing program that will give you results both technically and physically.  Arcana is very lucky to have Poo Choi Kru Julio as part of the team.

Ottawa’s Martial Arts School

What do I need to train?

Once you become a member at Arcana Martial Arts, you are required to wear a uniform and for hygiene purposes, use your own equipment. There are several packages to choose from, that we have put together to save you money. If you are trying a class for the first time it is recommended that you wear comfortable workout clothes; that include a t-shirt, shorts, track pants or tights. At our pro-shop we sell water, energy drink and protein shakes that will assist you during and after your workout.

Do both females and males train at the school?

We try to create an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable regardless of the sex, race, culture, or creed. We are very proud to have approximately 25% of our membership females (something which is hard to find in the Martial Arts world)

Do I have to be a fighter to join?

No, you don’t have to be a fighter to be involved in Muay Thai. Muay Thai although considered a fighting art is used in fitness and self defense regimes all over the world. Many people get involved in Muay Thai to get fit and learn self defense. It is practiced all over the world with few taking it to a competitive level. 95 % of our student base have no interest in competing in a ring, in fact, most of our members have never been involved in any martial arts prior to joining.

Will I bulk up?

Everyone has a different body type and fall into one of three categories. The Ectomorph, Mesomorph and Endomorph. It is because of the category that you fall in that BJJ can offer different results. The Ectomorph that is small in stature thin, may look for putting on some muscle mass, the Mesoporph that has an athletic shape body maybe interested in toning and increasing their cardiovascular capabilities, the Endomorph which is of a heavier set body type will look to for weight loss and conditioning.

Does BJJ get you fit?

Absolutely. When participating in BJJ, you will use sport specific exercises that target virtually every part of your body. There is a great balance between cardiovascular and resistant training exercises. The BJJ workout is considered by many to be one of the most rigorous exercise programs in the world.

Will I Get Hurt?

While BJJ is a physical/ combative sport, no one should be getting injured while training. Our team of highly qualified instructors ensure that they run safe classes where the chance of injury is very minimal. If you follow instructions well BJJ will help with preventing injury and in most cases healing old ones. Although BJJ is a fighting Art there are less injuries then in most contact sports. Because the workout targets the full body, you will feel muscle pain and this is normal. Whenever you perform movements that the body is not used to, you will always develop “workout pain” but there is an old cliché that says: ” no pain no gain”.

Do I need to compete/ spar?

Not At All! Competition and sparring is completely optional and students are never pushed into it against their will. Only about 5% of our students compete and therefore the other 95% are here to have fun, get fit, and learn some self defense.

I Have Never Done Any Martial Arts. Can I Do BJJ?

Yes you certainly can. Most of our members have never been involved in any martial arts prior to joining. There is an old saying which says that a blank sleight, is the best to work with!
